CARE professionals provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as classified by the DSM-V. Attendees will gain useful knowledge about the disorder as well as valuable teaching tools that will guide teaching practices of individuals on the spectrum.
Various Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) procedures found useful with individuals with ASD will be presented briefly during this presentation. For a more comprehensive ABA training, please see what is offered in the CARE ABA Training.
Autism Assessment Tool Training
CARE consultants who have received training on the use of various assessment instruments and have extensive experience serving on assessment teams in public school settings can tailor a training to meet the needs of each district.
- Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2) – 2 day facilitated training
The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. This revision improves an instrument already viewed as “the gold standard” for observational assessment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related disorders. While Western Psychological Services (WPS) has offered limited clinical trainings around North America since August 2013 the current demand for training is not being fulfilled.
CAREs facilitated training provides school evaluation personnel with training on the instrument and also how to utilize the instrument as part of a more comprehensive evaluation that not only looks at whether the student meets eligibility for autism but how to use information gained as part of the evaluative process to plan for intervention.
- Autism Diagnostic Interview -Revised (ADI-R) – 2 day training
The ADI-R is a comprehensive interview, which provides a thorough assessment of individuals suspected of having autism or other related disorders. The ADI-R has proven highly useful for formal diagnosis as well as treatment and educational planning.
Western Psychological Services (WPS) is no longer offering clinical trainings on this instrument that is highly recommended for use with the ADOS-2 and provides an opportunity for parent to provide detailed input on their child’s current behaviors and early developmental milestones.
The administration of this instrument with the parent(s) by a trained professional ensures that parents have been a part of the evaluative process.
- ADOS-2 Live Administration – Optional Follow-up Day
A third day or follow up day of training can be added that allows the CARE trainer to conduct two live administrations of the ADOS-2 with participants observing while taking notes across the tasks, coding and scoring using the algorithms as a means to assist school based evaluators with the establishing inter-rater reliability that is a necessity for using either of these instruments in the public school setting as part of an evaluation.
